(Bryn Mawr, Pa.) — Bryn Mawr Hospital pediatric nurses continued their tradition of hosting its annual Halloween Diabetic Candy Exchange for children with Juvenile Diabetes and their families on November 1. This year’s event, funded by the Bryn Mawr Hospital Women’s Board, featured the Phillie Phanatic, Steve Clarke “The Amazing Pumpkin Man” and Philadelphia Zoo’s “Zoo on Wheels.” The event gives children and adolescents with diabetes, ages one through 18, the opportunity to enjoy trick or treating with their friends, and then, instead of discarding candy, exchange it for a gift bag.
Juvenile Diabetes, also known as Type 1 diabetes, has its onset during childhood. Children diagnosed with Juvenile Diabetes are insulin dependent, meaning their bodies lack the hormone that is necessary to convert the food they eat into energy. According to the American Diabetes Association, about one in every 400 children and adolescents has type 1diabetes.
